Why learn how to program(write code)?
In today's society, algorithmic thinking and problem solving is not only useful for IT professionals, but also people that want to work in technology at any level and understand the fundamentals behind IT systems.

This course assumes no previous programming experience. In the first half of the course, we will learn the basic concepts in a hands-on approach. We will solve simple day-to-day computational problems. This will be done using the programming language called Python.

In the second half of the course, you can decide what to focus on. We can look into how IT professionals work in teams in the industry and the essentials of working with an IT department(different workflows, work organization, open-source software, quality assurance, version control, testing, incident response, etc). Alternatively, we can look more into advanced concepts such as Object Oriented Programming and touching on how to build mobile apps. Or a mix of both!

About the course leader:
I am a final year BSc Computer Science student at the University of Manchester. Last year I have completed my industrial placement where I worked for a technology company in Greater Manchester.

FAQs

Where do the classes take place?

All our classes take place at our Oxford Road office: International Society, William Kay House, 327 Oxford Road, Manchester, M13 9PG. When you arrive for your class there will be a notice-board showing you which room your class is in.

What should I bring to the class?
The teacher will provide all the material for the class. All you need to bring is pen and paper to take notes.

Can I get a refund?
You can only claim a refund up to 24 hours after your second lesson. This enables you to attend two lessons and see if the class is suitable for you. If you decide to leave before the deadline then you must claim your refund from the main International Society office. You will get back the registration fee minus the cost of the classes that have already taken place.

Also, if we have been unable to provide all the lessons paid for by the end of the term (due to teacher illness for example) we will also refund you the cost of these classes. All refunds must be claimed before the end of that term of classes. Refunds (and registrations) are not transferable to pay for another class or another service at the Society nor can they be transferred from one term to the next. You are responsible for claiming your refund before the end of the refund period.

Please note there is a £1 administration charge for any refund given.

Can I change class?
If you find that the class you have joined is not of a suitable level, you can change to another class providing there is available space in the class you’d like to move to.

THE SOCIETY AND STAFF CANNOT BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY DAMAGE, LOSS, OR INJURY SUSTAINED BY PARTICIPANTS IN INTERNATIONAL SOCIETY CLASSES.
